Hadley-Luzerne Baseball Makes History with First Section Title in 56 Years!

TROY, N.Y.The wait is finally over! For the first time since 1968, the Hadley-Luzerne Eagles are Section II, Class D Champions. The historic win came in dramatic fashion Saturday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, with a walk-off bases-loaded walk sealing the victory against Mekeel Christian Academy.

With the score tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Noah Springer showed patience under pressure, taking a full-count walk to send Mason Dunn home for the winning run—setting off a celebration 56 years in the making!

"We wanted to honor every team that came before us," said Head Coach Jay Connelly. "We had former coaches and players from decades past in the stands, including someone from that legendary 1968 team. This was for all of them."

A Game Full of Momentum Swings

  • Hadley-Luzerne took an early 2-1 lead after a clutch infield RBI single from Taylor Smead, followed by an error that let Springer race home.

  • Mekeel Christian fought back in the third, reclaiming a 3-2 lead, but Mason Conklin electrified the crowd with a two-run, inside-the-park home run to put Hadley-Luzerne back on top at 4-3.

  • Mekeel tied it up in the sixth, but left two runners stranded, setting the stage for the Eagles' unforgettable walk-off moment.

Pitching was elite on both sides. Hadley-Luzerne's Matt Case recorded 11 strikeouts in five innings, while Mekeel's Caleb Hussey fanned 10 batters over six innings. Springer closed it out with two scoreless innings in relief, earning the win.

What’s Next?

The Eagles advance to the state tournament and receive a bye to the regional round. They’ll face the winner of the Section X vs. Section VII sub-regional matchup on Saturday, June 1. The game location depends on the outcome of that matchup.
