Lake Luzerne Man Arrested After Violent Incident in Glens Falls

A Lake Luzerne man is facing serious charges after authorities say he threatened a woman’s life at gunpoint, assaulted her, and later turned the weapon on himself.

Shawn P. Cheney, 30, was arrested Monday following a months-long hospitalization for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face, stemming from a November 19 incident at a Henry Street home in Glens Falls.

Terrifying Attack Leads to Arrest

According to Glens Falls Police Capt. Michelle Arnold, the violent altercation began as a verbal argument but quickly escalated when Cheney became physically aggressive. Authorities say he:

  • Slapped the victim before grabbing a loaded shotgun

  • Choked her with the weapon and struck her in the face with the gun’s stock

  • Threatened to shoot her as she tried to escape

  • Threatened a young child in the home, forcing the child to hide

At one point, the victim knocked the barrel of the shotgun away when Cheney pointed it at her chest. Desperate to escape, she tried to flee to a neighbor’s house—only for Cheney to warn he’d shoot her before she could make it out the door.

The victim was eventually able to retrieve her phone and call 911, but by the time police arrived, Cheney had fled to the backyard, hiding behind a shed with the shotgun. Moments later, a gunshot rang out—Cheney had shot himself in the face, but survived.

Criminal History & Charges

After spending nearly three months recovering at Glens Falls Hospital, Cheney was officially taken into custody upon release. He now faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including:

  • Strangulation (Felony)

  • Aggravated Family Offense (Felony)

  • Unlawful Imprisonment (Felony)

  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon (Felony)

  • Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Misdemeanor)

  • Criminal Mischief (Misdemeanor)

He was arraigned Monday and sent to Warren County Jail without bail.

Authorities also confirmed Cheney has a lengthy criminal record, including a 2009 conviction for sexual misconduct, which classifies him as a Level 2 sex offender. His past offenses include:

  • Attempted strangulation (2011 conviction)

  • Failure to register as a sex offender
