Lifelong Hadley Resident and Army Veteran Jay L. Gilbert Dies at 91
A respected family man, Army veteran, and longtime International Paper employee, Jay Gilbert leaves behind a lasting legacy built on hard work, community, and nearly a century of life in Hadley.

HADLEY, N.Y. Jay L. Gilbert, a lifelong resident of Hadley, United States Army veteran, and dedicated International Paper employee, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2026, at Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs. He was 91 years old.
Born on June 26, 1935, in Hadley, Jay was the son of the late James Dudley and Daisy Madison Gilbert. Following his service in the United States Army from 1955 through 1958, he returned home and began what would become a remarkable 39 year and 2 month career at International Paper in Corinth. Starting in the finishing room, he later worked as a roll grinder before retiring as a respected shift mechanic.
On September 27, 1958, Jay married Faith Brooks at the First United Methodist Church in Corinth. Together they shared 65 years of marriage before Faith's passing in March 2024.
Outside of work, Jay was well known for his passion as a model train dealer, coin dealer, and avid collector. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, and camping. His commitment to his community was reflected through his memberships in the William J. Varney American Legion Post 862, the Coopers Cave Coin Club, and the Quarter Century Club at International Paper.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Faith, and his siblings Albert Gilbert, Alma Winslow, Myrtle Aldrich, Joseph "Dudley" Gilbert, Edna Haskins, and Janet Waite.
He is survived by his children Robert (Debra) Gilbert, William (Debbi) Gilbert, Timothy (Crystal) Gilbert, Mark (Denise) Gilbert, Andrew (Becky) Gilbert, Julie (Louie) Maurais, all of Hadley, and Amy Reed of DeWitt, Iowa. He also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will remember him for his quiet strength, dedication to family, and lifelong ties to the Hadley community.
